Using Library Computers
Library public terminals (or public computers) are shared devices available for general use. To help protect your privacy and ensure a safe and respectful environment for all users, please take a moment to review the guidance below.
Protect your personal information
You can protect your personal information by ensuring it is not accessible to the next user. When using a public computer:
- avoid saving usernames and passwords in the browser
- be mindful of sensitive information displayed on the screen.
When you finish using a public computer - log out of any accounts (such as email, social media and academic platforms like Ark)
- remove any files you have downloaded, created or saved while using the computer
Your files and downloads
Ensure you manually save your files while working. Automatic-saving or cloud-syncing functions may not work reliably on public computers. Files saved during your session may remain on the computer unless you remove them. Before you leave:
- save any files you intend to keep to a personal device or drive
- delete all other files you have downloaded, created or saved onto public computers
- empty the recycle bin if applicable.
If you are unsure, library staff can assist. If you have already left the library and need to recover or remove personal files, please contact library staff as soon as possible. Dalton McCaughey Library may not be able to recover your files if they have been left on public computers.
Using a shared device respectfully
These computers are used by many people throughout the day. Please:
- Respect other people’s privacy and use of the space. If personal information has been left by the previous user, please let library staff know.
- Be mindful of others who may be waiting to use the computer
- Avoid accessing or leaving behind inappropriate, disruptive or confidential content
- Return the browser to the Dalton McCaughey Library homepage when you have finished
- Follow library policies and staff directions.
About your experience on this website
To improve usability on shared devices, this website may recognise when it is being accessed from a public library computer. This helps provide reminders about privacy and shared use, and improves your experience while using these devices. This does not identify you as an individual user.
