The Incredible Love of God

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:
“For your sake, we face death all day long;
    We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”[a]
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[b] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:31-39 (NIV)

This passage in Romans is the conclusion of Paul’s demonstration of God’s love. Chapters 5 to 8 are full of the wonderful news of salvation and God’s love for us. Paul highlights two points, the main being God’s love, and because of this, God makes us ‘more than conquerors’.We can have great assurance that God is in control and protecting us with the many rhetorical questions in this text, especially the first few verses. In verse 31, “if God is for us, who can be against us?”. In 32, “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all – how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?”, again in 33 “who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen”. Verse 34 continues with Who then is the one who condemns?” and ending in verse 35 “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?”. The answers to all these questions are obvious, who can be against us? No one (v31) Will God graciously give us all things? Absolutely (v32) who will bring any charge against God’s chosen? No one (v33) Who is the one who condemns? No one except Christcan condemn, and no one except Christ can intercede for us (v34) who shall separate us from the love of Christ? No one (v35).

These questions are very powerful demonstrations of just how much it really is that God loves us. God won’t let anyone be against us or condemn us or separate us from Him. Yet we often don’t think about it or even consciously think about it. Paul goes even further in verse 36, quoting Psalm 44:22, “For your sake, we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered”. Paul reminds us of this bleak message in scripture to remind us of what sin will result in without God, but despite sin conquering man on earth, God promises to make us “more than conquerors”. Not only does God’s love allow us to conquer sin, but we become even more than just a conqueror of sin. We won’t just survive the toils of life, we will receive an absolute victory over them, all through God’s divine strength, given to us through his incredible Love. In light of this good news, let us give thanks to God.

Our Lord and Saviour,

We thank you for your incredible and merciful gift of your love and salvation. You gave it to us, even though we could never earn it and never deserved it, but you still chose us while we were deep in our sin. Help us, Lord, each and every one of us to see this gift, and be grateful, and to praise you for it. Help us not to keep this inside us but to have the courage to speak out in the lives of others around us to share this incredible gift.

 In Jesus’ precious name we pray,

 Amen.
