MCD Research Repository

On 3rd June 2009 the Melbourne College of Divinity launched their Research Repository. This is an online database of research documents by MCD staff and postgraduate students (including theses). Anyone may access the repository, though access to some documents may be restricted.

Wireless at the DML

Wireless networking is now available at the library and at the Centre for Thgeology & Ministry. The "CTMPUBLIC" network is available throughout the building, and is administered jointly by the CTM and the library. Wireless access is provided for research and study purposes; this means that some web sites and file types are resticted. Please contact the CTM front desk or library staff for more information, or read our Information Technology for Library Users pamphlet.

Printing in the library

The library is now able to provide printing facilities. Visitors to the library will be able to print from search terminals, the library workstation, or from their own laptop computers at a cost of 11c per copy. If you would like more information there is a Printing Facilities pamphlet in the library, or please ask library staff.

New member of staff

The library is proud to introduce Gabrielle Chiu: Gabrielle will take over Carol Pikos' duties as the Lending Services Coordinator until Carol returns from maternity leave (early 2010).

Borrower alerts with Library Elf

Library Elf is third party internet-based monitoring service that will help you keep track of loans that are due or overdue, and requests that are ready for collection. It does this by sending you reminders and alerts by email or RSS.

Registration with Library Elf is free, and immediate. All Library Elf requires of you is your name, email address and a password, and for you to accept their Privacy Policy. Sign up with Library Elf here.

Once you have a Library Elf account you are able to register your borrower's card with all of the libraries that you use that are supported by the service. Find the Dalton McCaughey Library and other local libraries under "International" in the list provided.

You can determine when and how often you want notices and reminders to be sent to you, and by what delivery method.

Library tours

The new semester starts today, 23rd February. To welcome new users our Chief Librarian, Stephen Connelly, will conduct tours of the library this week, 23rd-26th February, at 1:40pm.

The tours should take around 20 minutes, and will provide an introduction to both our part of the building and to the services we provide for our users.

Anyone is welcome to come along on a tour of the library, and there is no need to book in advance. Just turn up at the information desk at 1:40 any day this week.

If you are unsure whether you may borrow from us, please check our Membership page, or call our staff on 93408888.

Wireless computing in the library

Starting early in the new year library users will be able to use the library's public wireless network for computing. This public netork will be used by both library users and visitors and staff of the Centre for Theology and Ministry, and will be administered by both the library and the CTM.

Users of the library are reminded that this service is provided for research purposes, and there are some restrictions on what type of traffic will be allowed.

More news will be available in the new year.

New Evacuation Signs

We recently had our very first fire drill since moving into the new building. The drill was a success, and we thank all library users that took part in it.

Regular visitors to the library may have spotted our new emergency evacuation signs, placed in central locations on all floors and just outside the library entrance. Users of the library should familiarise themselves with these evacuation routes in case of fire or other emergency. When asked to evacuate the library, please use the nearest exit and do not use the lift.

There is another fire drill scheduled for some time in February, and indeed there will be regular drills every semester. We realise that it is sometimes an inconvenience to take part in these events, but we ask all our users to please follow instructions by fire marshalls or staff members, for their own safety as well as everyone else's.

New reference PC available

The library has purchased a new reference computer. Borrowers can use this computer to save online research results to their USB thumbdrive (the library does not provide thumbdrived for borrower use). Additionally, the BibleWorks Bible study application has been installed on the reference PC.

We plan to be able to provide printing facilities and word processing applications on this computer in the new year. Bookings may be made at the front desk.

Commemorative plaque

On 8th November 2007 a tree was planted outside the library.

Library visitors may also have noticed this week that a new commemorative plaque was added, "in gratitude to those who have taught in this Theological College over past generations.

Used Book Sale

Visitors to the library may have noticed that for some time now we have had a second-hand book sale table at the front of the library.

DML Book Sale

Fresh sale stock is available every few days. Proceeds go towards library purchases.

Ecology and Theology grant

A small selection of books

The Melbourne College of Divinity has provided the library with a grant for the purchase of books to do with ecology and theology. We are in the process of purchasing and processing these books.

If you'd like to know when any new books become available for loan at the Dalton McCaughey Library please consult our New Books pages here or subscribe to our New Books RSS feed here.

EndNote X2

A new version of the EndNote citation software has become available at the library. There are installation discs for version X2 (for both Windows and Macintosh). Please note that only MCD postgraduate students or UFT academic staff may borrow these discs, as per the MCD's license agreement.

"Who may borrow?"

Uniting Church lay staff (Lay Pastors, Youth Workers, Community Ministers, Accredited Lay Preachers, Pastors (or equivalent, such as youth leader, pastoral visitor, worship leader or children and family worker currently in a recognised placement or appointment) may now borrow from the Dalton McCaughey Library. We have amended our Membership page to reflect these changes. Please consult the Membership page is you're not sure whether you will be allowed to borrow from us.

Retrospective Cataloguing Project

In 1994 we closed our card catalogue (that is, we stopped adding cards for new books to the card catalogue). Since then we have been slowly moving our bibliographical information into the computer catalogue.

At the moment, only around 8000 books remain to be added to the computer catalogue. All books on level 1 should be on the computer catalogue, as well as most of the books on level 2.

When looking for a book, please consult the computer first. Only if you cannot find the book in the computer catalogue should you consult the card catalogue. Please contact staff if you cannot find what you need.

Summer hours

During the non-teaching period the library will be open Monday-Friday, 9:00-5:00. On Wednesday 24th December we will be open 9:00-1:00 only. The library will be closed for the Christmas break on 25th December-11th January. Normal semester hours will recommence on Monday 23rd February 2009.

Children's Ministry Collection

With the help of a generous donation from a Uniting Church family, the library has purchased a collection of children's books - largely picture books for young children - to support ministry to children. The new collection will be available from Monday March 3 and is located in the southern corner of Level 1. We have some of the books on display this week on the ground floor.

Postgraduates' Room

The Postgraduates' Room which offers specialized facilities to MCD Research students has opened and will be officially launched on March 6. Click here for more information. A brochure and application form are available at the Loans Desk.

Trinity College students and staff

On the basis of an agreement signed last year between the owners of the library and Trinity College, Trinity College staff, students of Trinity College who are also students of The University and/or the Trinity College Theological School, and Anglican clergy in Victoria became automatically entitled to a Dalton McCaughey Library borrower's card. The Library extends a welcome to new borrowers from these groups.
